Missing an employee

I have a barn setup with 4 chemist and 4 handlers. I spend most of my time at the docks now, I just go back to restock every so often.

I am missing a handler employee, no idea how. If he was dead, how would I know??.

I'm aware if they have died you need to hire a replacement employee, the employees bed is still assign to it and a daily wage is still being consumed. I have saved and reloaded the game a few times but no change
