Health insurance broker fraud
Location: Arizona
My husband and I filed our 2024 taxes married-jointly earlier this year using an H&R Block agent that we have used for +6 years. State and federal filings were accepted, and we were going to receive refunds for both. A week ago we received a letter from the IRS stating we needed to provide a 1095A. This was confusing because we both submitted 1095Cs, as we have coverage through our employers (separately), and have been insured through our employers for over a decade. 1095As are for people who have insurance through the ACA Marketplace.
So we talked to our tax person and she said we would need to contact the Marketplace directly. I called them this morning and the woman I spoke with confirmed that an independent broker (she was able to provide the name and ID # of that broker) signed my spouse up in Feb 2024 for a UHC medical insurance plan through the Marketplace. The rep from the Marketplace confirmed that this is a kind of fraud they are trying to crack down on, and she had investigated/resolved about 20 of these cases this year alone. I had her start a case and will be following up on that.
I am absolutely furious that the broker was able to do this. My spouse signed nothing, filled nothing out, and made no requests of any kind. That means the broker had to find my spouse’s personal info and take all the actions to sign him up for the insurance secretly. Why do that unless you are benefiting in some way?
I don’t want this person to benefit from their theft; is there any way to peruse this legally?
