Strange booking cancellation

Hello all, my family is visiting me this month, and they booked a flat on Booking for a week (like 4 months ago..so cheaper prices), yesterday they received a message on the platform saying they have to cancel the stay at this place cause of a new owner. That’s a bit weird cause the stay is next week, and we also found other appartements at this same exact location on the website. Is it an overbooking technique? Is it bc they want to put it again on the platform and raise the price? I called them and ask, and the guy told me it’s bc of the a change of owner but it is strange..right? Is it common?
