Did I accidentally delete the ads?

I heard that you could politely ask Amazon chat to remove the ads, but that's no longer possible. However, I decided to give it a try. The only time I connected to Wi-Fi was when I started my Kindle, but afterward, I left airplane mode on. And I didn't run the software update that was listed as pending.

In the chat they ask me for the name of the device, but then they tell me I should pay about $20 with a US card (I'm not from the US). But at that moment the Kindle starts updating and when it finishes it no longer has any advertising.

I don't know if the chat guy removed them anyway or if by updating the device and having it in airplane mode the ads no longer appear.
