What is the general consensus on Isabel Allende?
As a native Spanish speaker, I do feel she provides this bridge between popular fiction and literary fiction. Her prose is very accesible ( beautiful and lyrical at times), and I do find that she engages with a lot of universal themes well. I do feel, however, that there could be a gender bias that she isn’t taken as seriously as other Latin American writers. I think that can also be attributed to the way she’s presented and referenced in shows like Jane the Virgin.
