How often do I REALLY need to change my oil?

This is my first post here, but I’m genuinely wondering. I work very close to home and my commute is only 2 or so miles. I got my oil changed six months ago and I’m supposedly due for a change, but I have a hard time believing that it’s really necessary given how little I travel (less than 1000 miles this 6 month period). I suppose that it could degrade but, I would not know and I can’t seem to find a reputable source for this information or consistency.

Should I really go get an oil change anyways because the sticker says so? I have very little automotive knowledge or experience so any insight would be helpful.
