My biggest problem with the anime…
So I just finished the anime yesterday and thought it was ok, I’m a huge fan of the game series (though took a break from it for a bit) and I absolutely adore both Castlevania shows but I kind of have a huge problem with the show…
It’s kind of..problematic? Like making seemingly a majority of sentient demons good people represents such a huge issue for us to be following Dante, Lady or any other “demon” hunter.
Like they’re also supposedly humans that evolved different in addition to being mostly good so that just made our main protagonist of this show a racist serial killer who specifically targets a minority group to commit horrific hate crimes against. (This is so fucking silly to say about a DMC show I’m just trying to engage with the show on its own terms but like it’s so logically flawed). I won’t even touch on Mary/Lady cause I think the show doesn’t like what she does but Dante is always shown to be so “cool” by the show but it’s really hard to think that when…yeah hate crimes.
And then there’s the whole ending thing that turns Dante into border patrol?? What the fuck
And like calling Dante and our heroes demon hunters is super fucked up when like again a majority of demons are just people of a different race than our main characters.
I’m not even going to touch on the fact that the demons are supposed to be standins for Muslims post 9/11 because holy shit
Idk very hard to even give Adi Shankar and crew the benefit of the doubt when he’s a Trump supporter who showed up to the inauguration. This whole thing kind of reeks of something he thought would be “cool” rather than like a story he wanted to tell about oppression because if it really was a story about oppression he wanted to tell then he probably would have thought about it a little harder and realized maybe this wasn’t the avenue to take.
