How to make macbooks last long?

I've heard of some people who had macbook 2011s that still work.

Mine died last year after it started shutting down by itself and then losing screen sometimes.

My macbook 2008 died after ants went inside it 3 years ago.

How did some people get their macbooks to last long (other than to not use it)?
