Back to academia after industry?

After my PhD in biology, I took a team lead position in a chemical company. I’ve realised that I’m not happy with this kind of job and I really miss research and science. The kind of industry R&D jobs I see around there are also not really appealing to me. I’m thinking about applying for academic post doc positions but I’m afraid that I’m too out-of-touch with research and no longer an interesting candidate after almost two years… do you reckon I can still go back?
