Getting someone's attention from a distance

A big thing I've learned through the deaf community is "turning your voice off" being a part of learning. I'm not very good at doing that, because it's a pain to get my family's attention without my voice, especially from a distance.

I've tried knocking on stuff and it just sends the dogs into a frenzy without getting anybody to look at me. I can't flick the light switches because it messes the lights up and frustrates my parents. I've tried waving and that doesn't work at all. I'm tempted to start carrying around a nerf gun and just pop people with foam bullets until they look at me, but figured I'd check in for other suggestions before I turn to drastic measures.
