[TOMT] Sci Fi book read to me in class around 2007

So all I remember about this book is a guy gets struck by lightning or something and then is sent to an alien world or the future or a different dimension and then leads the people there in a war. Eventually he spends so much time there he starts to resemble the people/aliens he leads and then at the end of the book he is sent back to his original time/world.
