Social constructs
There is so much stigma around what people normally call "self harm" so most people who do it try to hide it. It is really more common than one thinks initially. If humans were half smart they would know to consider smoking and drinking alcohol as much as self harm as cutting is.
What is socially accepted as "good/sane" vs "bad/maladaptive" is a social construct that does vary if you move to a different society or even just in time one same place. In a hypothetical society where enduring pain is valued, cutting would be a form of practice ritual to toughen up.
I won't tell anyone here to not do it. Heck, I just did it myself. Just be careful.
