Random Networking Question
Random Networking Question
Hello, I was hoping to get some advice about what I should do for a network connection for my rig. My wife wanted to move the location of the router to a different entry point in the home. I used to have a hardwire connection from my computer to the router. But now, with the new router location, I would have to run a new cable from the router on the main floor to my basement room. So, I am weighing different options and would love to read people's thoughts and questions.
First and foremost, is Wi-Fi 7 powerful enough to support gaming over wi-fi? I typically play games like Helldivers 2, Starcraft 2, GTA 5 (and probably 6 when it comes out), etc that require a netwoek connection if I'm playing multiplayer. The new router is Wi-Fi 7 compatible. I could buy an adapter for my computer that is Wi-Fi 7 compatible. Do those exist outside of a USB receiver? Is there like a PCI Wi-Fi 7 wireless card that I can buy?
Option two is I have a motherboard that I thought had a built-in Wi-Fi receiver on it. Turns out it does not. I could upgrade my motherboard (just. the. motherboard... I say to myself... Nothing else) that has a Wi-Fi adapter built in. I have the 13th generation Intel I9 processor. If I recall correctly, that requires an LGA 1700 CPU socket. Is anyone still making that CPU socket with a built-in Wi-Fi 7 adapter? Are the tariffs going to make these motherboards extremely expensive?
Option 3 is to create a new hardwire route with the new router location. This is ultimately the biggest bummer because the old line is now essentially useless so I'm a little grumpy about the money wasted there.
I know there is an option of potentially getting a cat extension cable to run from the new location to the old location where the hard wire started, but my research has led me to believe that extension cords for ethernet tank your internet performance. Big time.
Are there potentially other solutions that have not dawned on me yet?
Thanks in advance!
