Paul Atkins Confirmed as SEC Chair Under Trump, Signaling Pro-Crypto Shift

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Paul Atkins as the new Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in a 52-44 vote on April 9, solidifying a key regulatory shift under the Trump administration.

Atkins, a former SEC commissioner (2002–2008) and longtime Wall Street consultant, is widely regarded as a pro-crypto figure. He founded Patomak Global Partners in 2009, and most recently co-chaired the Token Alliance, a crypto advocacy group, until late 2024.

Atkins replaces acting chair Mark Uyeda, following the departure of Gary Gensler, whose tenure was marked by a series of aggressive enforcement actions against crypto firms. In contrast, Atkins has pledged to provide a "principled and coherent" framework for digital asset regulation.

With a reported $6 million in crypto-related investments, including in firms like Anchorage Digital and Securitize, Atkins’ personal and professional alignment with the crypto space has raised hopes for regulatory clarity and innovation-friendly oversight.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott expressed confidence in Atkins, stating he would “ensure American innovation flourishes” and reinforce the SEC’s crypto-forward stance under Trump, including the work of the SEC’s Crypto Task Force and the rollback of several Gensler-era enforcement actions.

Despite delays due to financial disclosures tied to his billionaire family connections, Atkins now steps into a pivotal role that could reshape how the SEC interacts with the digital asset industry.
