There are certain words (such as bass) which have not only completely separate meanings but also pronunciations. Why did this come to be and are there similar words in other languages? How is someone supposed to know how to pronounce bass if you simply read it by itself without any context?

Question

This feels like a real weakness in the English language and I don't really understand why different spellings for the different meanings didn't naturally emerge. Is it the same in other languages?
