Did this guy in my class say something weird?
For context I’m in one of the top 10 universities in the world. Also studying a STEM subject at graduate level but I’m one of only three POC. I haven’t announced any of my grades openly but I have found out that I have gotten the highest marks so far in some modules compared to my entire cohort. The other day, I was having lunch in the student area and this white guy approaches me and asks me how I’m finding it. I give him generic answers on how I’m finding it okay and he tells me in the module where I got the highest marks in how he did extremely well and how he thinks nobody has done better than him. I congratulate him and I don’t feel comfortable talking about my marks just simply because I’m a bit more reserved and straight after he says something like “Its interesting how the university is so open to diversity and allows more different people from other type of backgrounds” and then he goes off on a 5 minute talk about how it used to be mainly white males that would attend. I just found the timing of that so odd and incredibly uncomfortable because I wasn’t sure if he was insinuating something?
