Race-Swap Roulette

Storyline Discussion

(This got deleted from somewhere else so I decided to post it here instead lol)

I had an observation which led to a thought which led to another thought.

As far as the show currently goes, for a Heroes of Olympus adaptation, there is no White girl representation. Annabeth is Black and so is Thalia now. Rachel might still be ginger, but we don't know that for sure yet, but Rachel didn't have that big of a role in HoO anyway.

So, following this, and following the idea of keeping racial representation in the show equal and stay in line with book canon to some degree, the logical course of action to maintain the equal representation would be to make Hazel White and change her backstory accordingly. Something along the lines of she goes to a mixed school in the 40s, still crushes on Sammy, doesn't like how he has to use the Colored water fountain and toilets, or how anyone has to be segregated like that, and the White kids hate her for sympathizing with the Colored kids, and the Colored kids hate her because they don't need her opinions.

Everything goes along after that.

But making Hazel White where Annabeth is Black to maintain the given representation in the books would lead to a nightmare, so I had a different idea.

Instead of being White, Hazel is Native American. She still maintains her non-White identity, still goes to the segregated school, still meets Sammy, still dies in Alaska. Now, obviously, keeping with the idea of equal representation, if Annabeth is Black, Hazel is Native (Red), then that leaves only one girl to be White:

Piper.

In order to make this fit, obviously, some of Piper's story would have to be given to Hazel, but you can still have Piper independent of her Cherokee identity and still have Piper. For example, all the Cherokee legends that Piper relays in HoO can still be there, and the way it goes is that Piper still grew up in Tahlequah, had a lot of Cherokee friends, and still learned the lore and culture of the tribe, which in turn led to Piper becoming invested in Native American history and culture as a whole. Piper still has her identity crisis from ToA, but it only pertains to who she is sexually instead of culturally, which, tbf, most people from what I've seen don't like Piper being Native in the first place.

I think it even works out for Hazel and Piper to have an amazing relationship. Hazel, Native American from the segregation era, maybe even a Cherokee herself, is brought back to life in an era where there is no more legal segregation, and is thrust onto a quest with a White girl who grew up surrounded by Cherokee Americans and was once best friends with several of them before she moved to California. Piper and Hazel become best friends, making a powerful story across time about White and Red girls coming together in a new era, one that doesn't prevent them from being friends anymore.

Black Annabeth, Native Hazel, and White Piper to keep the representation from the books equal, lol.

Or Disney just gives White girls the middle finger.
