Couldn’t get a Pap smear done again
I’ve (24F) had really heavy periods since I was around 20-21 with intense cramping, and the only thing that has helped has been birth control. But because of my pain and heavy bleeding and how quickly they started, I’ve wanted to get a Pap smear to rule out cervical cancer. For context, I’ve never had penetrative sex, but I have been sexually active in the past. I tried in 2023, but the gyno could see how uncomfortable I was, so she told me to come back later and we’d try again. Just yesterday, I finally summed up the courage to go back because my dad got diagnosed with prostate cancer last month, and I wanted to know if something was wrong or not. The experience was deeply traumatizing.
The gynecologist used a pediatric speculum, and it was a little uncomfortable for the most part, but nothing extraordinary. Well, that changed when she got nearly entirely in, and it felt like I was in the worst pain of my life, worse than my period pain. I complained that it hurt, and the gynecologist dismissed me and insisted that it didn’t hurt, and she kept going. At this point, I’m cursing up a storm because I’m in so much pain, and I asked her to stop, but she didn’t and tried to swab me without letting me know, which hurt even more. I had to yell at her to stop for her to stop, and by that point, I was crying from the pain. She couldn’t get a sample and told me to come back and we’d try again, but I felt so violated that I don’t see how I could go through that again.
I had to miss class because I felt so sore and in pain, and I bled the entire evening. I really really want to get it done because of my symptoms and family history of cancer, but I don’t know how I’ll manage with the pain. I’ve thought about maybe seeing a different gynecologist, but I don’t know if there’s anything else I can do. Any suggestions/advice?
