Asking Konoloa permission to use already stolen shells from Hawaii
Hi all!! I am not a Hawaiian native and I live over on the mainland. I have family in Hawaii and I take strong respect for the Hawaiian culture, values, and spirit of Aloha. I know that taking anything from beaches, even not in Hawaii, but ESPECIALLY in Hawaii, is very looked down upon and I have no interest in pissing off Konoloa. That being said, my boyfriends roommates niece used to live in Hawaii and brought back a big bag of collected shells, which my boyfriends roommate has had a hold of for many years now. I’ve recently started jewelry making and the shells are just so stunning and perfect pieces for my jewelry, but I don’t want to make “cursed” objects as a lot of what I try to bring through my jewelry making is positivity and grounding.
Basically, I wanna know if there’s anything I can do to properly ask Konoloa permission to use his shells. There’s no way of me being able to return these shells to the beach (I live in a landlocked state) and I would hate to see them go to waste and just sit in a bag for many more years.
Any advice would help, I just want to continue to respect the culture and beliefs, even from the mainland.
Thank you!!
