Lost
I tried to style this poem after the poem "The Tobacco Shop" by Fernando Pessoa. If you haven't read it, you should. It's fabulous.
Lost
I'm lost
I'll always be lost
Why would I want to be found
When hiding away is so much easier
(Isn't it?)
I sit and watch the world go by
At speeds I can't fathom
People going here, going there
Always in a hurry
(Where are they going?)
What is really so important
That makes people rush around
As if getting there faster
Means things will somehow be better.
What if they just slowed down
Took time to see the world around them
The shops with things in the windows.
Glittery things. Shiny things.
Noisy things. Smell good things.
(Do people even notice anymore?)
So I hide away never to be found
Because I move at a different pace
(Would you see me if you slowed down?)
Would you stop to listen
To hear my dreams, my thoughts
Or would you just keep going?
Hurrying off to somewhere
That must be very important
Eyes always down
Probably scrolling on your phones
Becoming lost in an electric world
Where everything is at your fingertips.
Everything but real life.
Real people, real touch.
Watching from my window I am sad
So many opportunities missed
A chance to smile at another
(Would you notice if I smiled?)
Would you hear me if from my window
I squeaked out a shy hello
Maybe you would stop and share some time with me
The world it moves so fast
I dream of a big clock stopping.
For even just a little while
So everyone can take a breath.
Take a moment to just be and just see.
(When will people wake up?)
This world was made for little moments
Little spaces in between.
Where hope and dreams get a chance to bloom.
There's so much here for us to explore.
(Are you willing to stop and find some?)
Stories that need to be heard.
Memories that need to be remembered.
But it's always a race against time
A race that we will never win.
Because time catches up with all
(And what will you do when it does?)
Will you regret the time you didn't take
Regret the pace you felt you had to keep?
In a world where everything is important
But nothing is also important.
(How do you know what is and isn't?)
So today I am lost
Lost in another time.
And here is where I'll stay
Waiting, for what, a moment of time?
(I really don't think I know.)
