My wife has asked for a separation. Do I respect her decision or try to get her to do counselling?
TLDR: my wife wants to separate as feels we have lost an emotional connection and while happy, feels she should be happier. I feel there are many reasons to stay together and I agree we have been emotionally disconnected but I feel that’s mainly a result of having a small child. But I’m wondering if I am being a typical guy and not getting or valuing the importance of an emotional connection so would appreciate advice especially from women please!
Context. My wife and I (both early 40s with a 4 year old child) have been together 10 years and married 2 years.
Things have been fairly hard the last few years, our child is a challenge and she was born during Covid. My wife likely suffered some post natal depression. We’ve renovated a house and my mum died a last year so feels like quite a lot has been happening.
Some of the spark had gone from our marriage and our communication had suffered, our chat has mostly been logistics. A couple of times when we have gone on dates the conversation has been a little stilted. She has said that she felt we rarely had “good” chats and while we have similar interests and life outlooks she is more interested in talking about people/feelings and I’m probably more interested in talking about places, things and current affairs. She wants someone who “gets her”.
We get on well, are good friends, she says she still loves me, likes me and and thinks I’m an amazing father. However she feels she should be happier and says we have lost an emotional connection. Up until she said she wanted to separate we were still having occasional (every 1-2 weeks) great sex, she had previously said we weren’t having more sex as she didn’t fully connected.
We have a very settled life, lots of friends, shared hobbies but also the space to pursue our own interests/see friends. Get on well with each others families. Financially stable.
I was excited about our future. I still enjoy spending time with her and find her very sexy. My love language is around quality time, physicality and words of affection , I know the latter two aren’t really her love languages.
For me it feels a bit of a no brainer to try to stay together and at least try counselling. But when I’ve brought up counselling she says because it is a feeling rather than a behavioural issue she doesn’t see the point. She does suffer from mental health issues and has historically had quite a bit of counselling.
She assures me no one else is involved or that this is a mental health issue. I feel I’m a good husband, I do almost all the cooking, house stuff, it’s always me who goes into our daughter if she wakes during the night. We have agreed to do 50/50 co-parenting.
There’s a bit of me that things just accept her decision. But I don’t think it is the right thing to do. I’m wondering whether my guy brain doesn’t get some of these aspects around emotional connection (or less of a priority) or whether I should try to push her to consider counselling?
