What is the highest rank yall for a guard at the gate to get onto base?

Went on base today and saw a rank i didnt recognize (havent gone to basic yet, may 20th is ship date) but with some googling it really looked like it was the rank of major or lieutenant colonel which seems like a weird place for someone who is a relatively high rank to be doing. But idk just curious.
