The south

I live in Canada, so be gentle lol I’m watching Justified, about a US marshal, and drug dealers in the hills. I’ve heard stories of the south, and about the Appalachian mountains. I know the show isn’t real. What I’m wondering is, how far fetched is it? Did the moonshine hills turn into meth mountains? Im obsessed with old lore like that.
