Could you “assassinate” a viltrumite with a regular weapon?

Viltrumites are so strong because of smart atoms, which behave like regular atoms until the body is in danger and behave differently like a viltrumite. Could you shoot a high velocity weapon at a viltrumite before their body has time to go into “danger mode” ?
