Options near Santa Monica

We’ll be visiting family. My son isn’t a beginner but isn’t an expert yet. Can easily handle 2-3 ft waves maybe a little higher. Any good consistent spots near Santa Monica or within an hour? El Porto or somewhere better? Just for the day. Thanks.
