Mouth taping insights

I've been practicing mouth taping for 2 years, almost daily. I use 3M tape, but tried also myotape and other brands. I also conduct a research related to breathing (incl. mouth taping) and interviewed/surveyed many mouth tapers. Super interesting outcomes.

Below I share key insights that will help you maximise your mouth taping and ultimately sleep. I would like to hear from those of you who have been practicing it for a long time. Please share your observations in the comments.

insights:

3M is great, but there is a huge advantage of myotape (the one with cutout). They are elastic and have "rebound" effect. When you apply it when stretched, it will serve as jaw muscles support. This feature imo makes myotape the only pro tape on the market. What I don't like about it is glue leftover after night, that's why I don't use it daily. Glue is a huge disadvantage of most of the tapes.

There are 3 important prerequisites that, if not fullfilled, could cause mouth taping to work against you: a) daytime correct breathing habits, b) oral posture, c) opened nose

a) the breathing habits you have during waking hours you take them to sleep. It is the first step to develop healthy breathing habits during the day. The questions is, what healthy means... in short: through the nose, diaphramatic, no chest breathing, no overbreathing.

b) keep correct oral posture. It does matter, where the tongue is. If your tongue rests at the bottom of your mouth, even the strongest mouth tape won't help. On the other hand if you will create a good habit of resting the tongue on the upper palate, it kind of "sucks in" and works as adhesive, and at some point no tape will be needed.

c) to be able to breathe through the nose while lying in bed. This should be a natural outcome of the a) point. This is complex topic. It was super complex for myself, I struggled with congested nose for over 30 years. How to fix this? It is individual thing, but first you can try intermittent hypoxic training, Buteyko exercise that opens the nose, only if these don't work try correcting septum and other invasive solutions.

  1. Mouth taping is not a solution. Is a way to support us while we build healthy breathing and sleeping habit. Mouth taping should be considered as temporary solution. Imo.

I'm very curious what are you insights and if you agree with the above. Thanks:)
