Getting back after a year of hiatus - Country with fun late-game?

Is there a country that has a late-game thats still challenging? I just dont like it when my factor wins the early game or late game and then you just brain roll over everyone else.

Any suggestion of country, faction, difficulty setting?

Thank you. :)
