22F afraid of relationship with 22M because of lack of hobbies

22/F and 21/M been together for almost a year.

This morning, my boyfriend and I got into a small argument about how I view gaming as more of entertainment rather than as a hobby. Just how I see myself turning on the tv after I get off work and unwinding as entertainment. However, he told me that watching tv and gaming is a hobby.

To get to the point, my boyfriend told me that he doesn’t like to do any other activities other than gaming because my reaction to that makes him uncomfortable. He told me he doesn’t like to draw anymore because I take an interest in it. I have told him in the past while he was drawing that it makes me feel attracted to him. Maybe I have a little “paint me like one of your French girls” fantasy since I am dating someone very artistically inclined!

Whenever he does anything that I find neat and creative, I tell him that I like it! Because I do! And he has always eaten it up! Except for today, when we were getting into it a bit over him gaming so much.

He told me that the praise makes him feel uncomfortable which is why he doesn’t draw as a hobby anymore. So now I feel bad because I never mean to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Especially when conveying their passions. I plan on just ignoring the next time he’s creating something and acting like it’s every other day. But I still feel a bit frustrated by this.

In my mind, this all seems like a way to deflect from the fact that all he really likes to do is game and smoke and that he doesn’t want to do more hobbies that feel “constructive” to me because that is the current state of our relationship. And really has been the state of our entire relationship.

He is a really good guy and always supports me in whatever I need. He’s a family man too. Healthiest relationship I’ve ever been in. We make each other laugh constantly and have a wonderful bond.

He has been unemployed for more than half of our relationship and when things like this come up, it makes me feel like an idiot because I feel like he just doesn’t want to do much more than get those little short dopamine rushes from gaming and such. And I have an undying hunger for being productive.

He says he’s looking into trade school. And he does get paid to help with family. So im glad about that.

I game too btw! But it is sprinkled into my life as in I work 30-35 hours a week and have two dogs I care for and many other hobbies,, so I don’t actually care for it much and it’s a rare thing.

I really just want to know if this seems like a way to make me feel like I shouldn’t want him to do other activities other than him gaming. Because sometimes, I feel like I am being played as a fool.

I’m also a very active person myself or at least I’m trying to get to that point! I am doing volunteer work for the community later this month and plan on going to a holistic festival soon. I just like to do things lol! I have goals to really get into my health and fitness this year. I’m outside as much as possible. I’ve taken up doing nails, cleaning, and gardening (actual plants lol). And I want to keep going!

I love him, but I want someone with the same amount of drive as I have.

Do you think he was throwing the issue on me? Or does the praise actually sound uncomfortable?

Does this look like a long term viable relationship?
