Main menu has me at a loss

I'm trying to start a crossplay run with my friend, but as if the game doesn't want me to, I can't click on the buttons on the main menu. Not all buttons, some buttons. I can't use some of the back and x buttons to leave certain screens. I can't create a lobby, I also sometimes can't switch tabs in the options screen. I can't even add him as a friend because I can't open that menu. I'm completely lost, I've seen answers vary from it's a bad computer, it's mods, it's not mods, it's keybinds, it's something so minute and random you'd never expect it. I need advice.
