What should I do now that the Chinese course changed so much?
I’ve been using Duolingo to study Chinese and also the music course. First, I got really frustrated with the music part because they suddenly changed a bunch of songs I had already earned 3 stars on after a lot of effort. Some songs were replaced by character versions that felt either too slow or too fast, which was kind of a bummer. But I kept using the app because my main goal was to have a daily reminder to study Chinese. It’s not my only resource, but the streak helps me stay consistent and do at least a little every day.
But now they’ve made huge changes to the Chinese course, and I’m feeling pretty demotivated, like a lot of people have said here already. One good thing is the new Score feature. But I was in Section 2 Unit 22 when they updated everything, and suddenly there are lots of words I’ve never seen before because earlier lessons were changed.
What made it even worse for me is that they added hanzi (only reading exercises) without any pinyin or clickable translations. I had actually been practicing reading hanzi and was doing okay before, recognizing a good number of characters. But now they’ve introduced new words I’ve never seen in my life, and without any kind of support, not even the translation after the exercise (that one is the worst part for me). Now when I use the app it’s mostly just pure guessing. It’s way too hard to learn anything that way.
So now I’m trying to figure out what to do. If I wasn’t part of a family Super subscription, I’d probably have quit already, but our plan runs until December and the rest of my family is still enjoying it.
I’m considering a few options and wanted to hear what others think:
I could restart the course and take the tests to be in a level I feel confortable, but I’d lose a lot of progress, including the pinyin practice I had done. Also I am afraid if I do that the course could just change again very soon or those exercises without any support could be improved.Try to learn the new words with the hanzi exercises tab.Review all the lessons in Section 2, where I noticed most of the changes, instead of restarting completely.Just keep going and hope things get better after another update, or that I eventually get used to the new vocabulary.
What would you suggest? I know a lot of people are dealing with this now or have dealt with it before in other languages, and I’d love to hear some opinions.
