Is FGU the best VTT for automation and a robust Marketplace?

Question / discussion

Hi all,

Me and my TTRPG friends all currently live in different states due to work/college things but want to continue playing online.

We primarily play 5e, CoC, WoD, and Starfinder. Generally only I or another member DM, he does better with the Eldritch Horror and modern style campaigns while I like to run the fantasy and sci-fi campaigns. We’ve both agreed that the important aspects of a VTT for us include strong mapping capabilities (line of sight, dynamic lighting, fog of war, etc.) for large scale battles and complex dungeons, strong automation to make combat go smoother, and a robust marketplace of official campaigns for the systems we play (we rarely make our own campaigns, but do from time to time).

From our own research, Fantasy Grounds seems like it fits all the above criteria, we especially like the text parsing so we can input abilities from the physical books we own without having to re-purchase the integrated ones. Our only hesitation is the “dated” interface. I personally love the nostalgic early 2000s CRPG aesthetics but the other DM thinks it isn’t going to be fun to look at for long periods of time.

My question is: are there any other VTTs out there that meet all of the above criteria but with a more modern interface, or is FGU our best bet and those that don’t like the interface will just need to get used to it? We’ve already strongly considered Foundry but both agreed we don’t like the currently limited marketplace and the reliance on community mods.
