I want to start doing pottery. Where do I begin?
Hi!! So if recently took a handholding class at my local pottery place. It was super fun and I found that I was kinda good at it, so I'd like to try doing it from home. My local pottery place allows people to bring in their final pieces to be fired, so I'm looking for advice, resources, etc.
In the class, we learned how to do some basic things over 6 weeks while handholding. We used glazes that did not require an overglaze to be fired, but as someone who has gone pottery painting a few times, I would like to try doing an underglaze and an overglaze on my pieces so that I can add more details and make some silly cute stuff, such as stuff with pictures and faces on it, and i'd also like to try my hand at using transfers.
So basically, here are some types of advice I'm looking for. You don't have to give me direct answers as I know they would be long, I'd also accept links to good tutorials that helped you learn, links to websites, etc.
How do I store the clay to ensure that it doesn't dry out?
After I finish the piece, how long should I wait to bring it to the pottery shop and have it fired?
Do i have to fire it with the underglaze and then fire it again with the overglaze on?
Do i have to dip the piece in the overglaze like I see online? Or do I just have to paint it on?
Is there anything I have to do that beginners aren't often aware of?
What kinds of tools should I be buying to get started?
Basically any advice is appreciated, but this is just a few things I'm wondering before I go out and spend money on a bunch of stuff, just to realize I really don't have everything I need. Thanks!!
