I am struggling with understanding why I should try to stop my OCD
I have been doing therapy for the past 6 weeks and it has been confirmed that I do suffer from OCD. No surprise — I self diagnosed it years ago, after spending a long time obsessing over all the things which could be wrong with me.
The thing I am struggling with the most now is understanding why I should continue with therapy and actually treat the OCD.
My whole life I have been exceptional at diagnosing and solving problems. I notice details most people don’t. This is because I obsessively look at everything to find out what’s wrong with it.
But…I don’t understand why I should stop doing that. I fully get that it causes me stress and anxiety. But, if I were to stop obsessing over everything, and that lack of obsession leads to something being messed up/overlooked, how in the world is that better?
Won’t that also cause unpleasant thoughts and feelings? When something bad happens and it could’ve been prevented if I had just obsessed over it…why would I let that happen?
And in general, what am I supposed to do with my brain when I’m not obsessing? Just…sit there? It sounds boring to me and not worth the effort of stopping my mental obsessions and compulsions (I do have a few physical compulsions but most are purely mental as well)
