And this reference concisely describes the 8 Stages of a Social Movement. 50501 is at Stage 4. Beware of Stage 5.

You will learn what Moyer calls The Four Roles of Social Activism; the CITIZEN, REBEL, REFORMER and CHANGE AGENT. I view the 50501 movement as being the REBEL role. You will then learn about the Eight Stages of the Process of Social Movement Success. The 50501 Movement is in Stage 4 of 8.

Note that the book was written in 2001 and I think of it as the state of the art at that time. In the intervening years there have been many successful (and unsuccessful) Movements that are analyzed in other books and papers. The Bill Moyer (not to be confused with Bill Moyers) book is currently published in paper form only and sells for around $15-20.
