Why did Europe lack an esoteric or mystical tradition?

I been thinking about this... their is a lack of esotericism and mysticism development in Europe, compared to say Africa and the African diaspora that has Voodoo, Hoodoo etc. or Native American shamanism etc.

Is this because it was dominated by a hierarchical and authoritative Christian church which viewed those things as "negative"?
