Panic Attack after MOHELA letter. Help.
I hit 120 months of qualifying employment as a public school teacher in January. Like so many of you, I am in the SAVE purgatory so my qualifying payments are stuck in time from back in June. I put in a buyback request in January and it was denied because they claim I didn't use the correct language (spoiler: I did), then put in a new buyback request in February but have heard nothing. So, last month I (perhaps stupidly) put in an application to move off SAVE onto a qualifying IBR. This brings me to today's panic attack (not an exaggeration).
I received a letter today with the following information about my four loans:
Loan 1: new monthly payment $78 starting on 8/17/25
Loan 2: new monthly payment $531 starting on 10/17/26
Loan 3: new monthly payment $114 starting on 8/17/25
Loan 4: new monthly payment $998 starting on 10/17/26
My banners on FedLoan have two of my loans at 112 and two of my loans at 114 qualifying payments. It's been this way forever, so the discrepancy doesn't concern me (two are from one degree and two from another). What does concern me is that the MOHELA letter says I have 14 payments left for the two starting repayment in August and 120 payments at the rate starting in 2026.
I feel so stupid for going off of SAVE, but I am desperate. I love teaching, but am just now reaching $75,000 salary and was hoping to leave the classroom for something else. We were planning to move from Utah to Portland this summer, but decided to delay for a year because I can't risk having no qualifying employment for two months between teacher contracts. This was supposed to be the year where I was free but I feel like I made such a big mistake.
Can someone help me make sense of all of this? Is this movement in the right direction or as terrifying as it feels?
