Benjamin Nethanyau is staging a coup and it’s frightening people don’t realize it
I’ve seen what happened inside Israel aside from the hostage crisis. Nethanyau literally fired Ronen Bar unilaterally, and even before October 7, he tried some judicial overhaul shit. Here is why I think we can call it a coup:
What is a coup?
A coup is an act by a person or entity to seize power in a country in an illegitimate manner. You have classic coups with troops storming a government building to overthrow their country’s government and establish a new one (which is how Napoleon and Pinochet happened), but also self-coups, or autogolpes, which is basically when an already established government expand their power or attempt to stay in power through unlawful means (examples include Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, what happened in Tunisia, or January 6).
How does this apply to Benjamin Nethanyau?
Since Israel is a democracy, its government rests on two important principles: separation of power and the presence of independent government agencies. Separation of power means that all three powers are given to three separate branches: the legislative power is given to an assembly, the executive power is given to the government, and the judiciary power is given to courts. As for independent government agencies, while they are funded by and dependent on the government, they are independent in the sense that they shouldn’t answer to the whims of a rogue leader and even hold them accountable. By doing this judicial overhaul thing, Bibi is openly undermined the independence of the judiciary by trying to put the Israeli Supreme Court at his beck and call. And when he fired Ronen Bar, his intent was clear: to put a loyalist at the head of Shin Bet so they would lose their independence to him and act as his secret police (remember Bibi tried to tell Ronen Bar to monitor groups and people that have been opposing him, which is balantly illegal).
In short, it is possible to say that Benjamin Nethanyau is doing a self-coup as he is literally trying to get powers that he doesn’t have, and he is illegally trying to have these powers. Nethanyau is a threat to democracy in Israel and must be deposed (and brought to the ICC so he would answer for his crimes against humanity).
