Fabric Softener Scent

No matter what liquid softener I use, by the time I get 1/2 way through the jug, the clothes stop smelling like the softener. They smell clean, but there is no scent. Why? I don't want to discuss pro/con on fabric softener on any other product. I just want to know why the scent stops.
