greatest US-Rapper from 2000s?
In the 2000s, there were many US rappers who achieved their breakthroughs and also their peaks during this time. For example, 50 Cent in 2003 and 2005 with his first two albums, which went almost diamond at 9x platinum, and two years later 5-6x platinum, only US sales figures.
Eminem in 2000 with his third album, which went diamond, and two years later his fourth album, which also went diamond. All subsequent albums up to 2013 went at least 4x platinum, multi-platinum (1x platinum = 1 million units sold, diamond = 10 million units sold, multi-platinum + 2 million units sold can also be 3, 4, 5, or 7 million, for example) and sold millions of copies.
Kanye West in 2004 with his first album, which went 4x platinum and received extremely high ratings during 2007. His third album was released, which went 7x platinum and almost went platinum with 957,000 sales in its first week. His fifth album followed in 2010. Some say that Kanye achieved legendary status with two or three albums in the 2000s. Let's jump back to 2004.
Lil Wayne ushered in the beginning of a dramatic rise in mid-2004, but it didn't reach its peak until a few years later, around 2008-2011.
Unlike his peers like 50 Cent or Eminem, Lil Wayne only slowly reached his peak three or four years later, around 2005, so more in the mid-to-late 2000s. While for some of the others, it flattened out again around 2005-2006. For example, 50 Cent's ratings and numbers were drastically declining - perhaps still good, but definitely declining compared to the previous years. Eminem had huge success, and Kanye West was considered a new creative artist, outside of classic gangsta rap, as he addressed new themes in the rap game and also set new sound standards.
Many rappers or musicians have one album or one hit single in their career that takes off and goes multi-platinum, and then never again – even if they release more singles or three to five albums in the following years, i.e. so-called one-hit wonders, such as Soulja Boy or Chingy, who had his only minor hit in the early 2000s.
But 50 Cent, Kanye West, Eminem, and Lil Wayne were considered the four most successful US rappers in the 2000s – but which one do you think was the best + pros/cons?
