Hee Su in class 2 (review)
Hee su in class 2 was turned into a live adaptation. At first I was super excited, but as l dove into more information about it it started to worry me. The story is supposed to focus on QEER relationships. Them adding a straight couple was already a foreshadowing of what was to come.
This story is supposed to show the struggle Hee Su goes through watching his one sided crush Ju Chan Young who is his best friend, and on top of that he is popular with the girls in his school. Honestly they did his character well. In the webtoon Hee Su is supposed to start liking Seung Won after helping him with getting into a relationship.
At first the pacing was done well the character were decent, but around episode 5 things started to be dragged and lost focus on what the whole book is about. They focus a HUGE amount of screen time on Chan Young and Choi Ji Yu. They basically made them the main couple instead. We didn't even get to dive into Seung Won's life, personality, family, and when he started having a crush on Hee Su.
The show didn't even properly dive into Hee Su himself, which is the MAIN point of the story, we didn't get to even properly know his interests, goofiness, and shyness from the book. They made astrology a big topic in the show which I liked and we could clearly see that Hee Su really liked it, but not ONCE did he explain it, or how he even got into it.
The show felt so watered down from the actual BL. There are 2 straight couples and one gay couple in a BL story??? This is more like a straight Kdrama that just happens to have a same-sex couple in the end. There were SO MANY chances for Hee Su and Seung Won to tell each other that they liked each other. I did appreciate how they both explained that it's not as simple to confess as it would be for straight people.
I was extremely excited to get a Korean "BL" that was going to be over 20 minutes with up to 10 episodes, I thought it would be another masterpiece like "The Eight Sense" which was released a while back. The was so much potential in this live adaptation, but the lack of communication, lack of screen/story time for some characters wasn't great. It was STRAIGHTWASHED. The fact that the addition of a straight couple that wasn't even in the original to over that much has to be a joke, might as well change the name, and say that the original webtoon was and "inspiration" for the show not an adaptation. My patience was truly being testes watching the show. The "side couple" was the main couple. One of the good parts of the show was the representation of Hee Su's sisters, they relationship were still adorable as in the webtoon. The fact that the supposed main couple (Hee Su and Seung Young) got basically 20 minutes in the last episode says it all. I understand the reason for no kisses between the 2 because the actor who played Hee Su was a minor at the time, I just wish we got the cute moments they had at the end more often during the show. Hopefully they make a second season.
But overall it was cute and I like the relationship between Hee Su and Seung Young and the acting was great, and Hee Su's relationship with everyone. In the end the show just fell short a bit.
