Guns+magic=power system
It is the norm in fantasy that if projectile weapons exist, they're either bows or guns that rarely work. The whole concept of high explosives is really neglected in the face of magic. But what if it wasn't?
Introducing, Sparkdust.
Sparkdust is the thing that my fantasy power system revolves around and it's a compound very similar to gunpowder except that it has magical properties when ignited. This, and the fact that coal doesn't exist at all, means that it drives society forward.
As the name suggests, it's magical properties are similar to electricity. This means that the substance is a great battery that doesn't require complex machinery or safe environments to operate. You just light it up and stick a copper rod in there. Therefore, sparkdust is found in all industrial, transportation and military machines.
There's also another use for the compound due to another of its by-products. After ignition, the various gases from the combustion are full of the magical electricity mentioned above. When inhaled by a human, they will grant increased strength, dexterity and perception, alongside minor pain negation and durability. One other side-effect is that it makes you high.
Due to its effects on people, sparkdust is highly regulated in many parts of the world, with governments seeking to monopolise it for control over the masses. However, this doesn't mean that they don't utilise it heavily. Almost every nation regularly employs shocktroops with heavy armour and spark-gas fed directly to them by breathing masks.
So, how is it? If you have any questions or criticism, I'm open to it all.
