Am I overreacting for feeling humiliated when my boyfriend keeps ordering for me at restaurants, even after I’ve asked him to stop?

👥 friendship

This might sound small or silly, but it’s honestly starting to affect how I feel about my relationship.

My boyfriend (28M) and I (27F) have been together for almost a year. From the beginning, he’s had this “gentleman” thing where he orders my food for me at restaurants. At first, I thought it was sweet, like something from a movie. But it’s been happening every time, and it’s starting to feel… demeaning.

He doesn’t ask what I want, he just decides. And when I try to say my order, he talks over me or gently squeezes my hand under the table like I’m doing something wrong. The worst part? He’s not even good at it. I’ve gotten the wrong thing more than once, and once I had to pick off mushrooms because he “forgot” I’m allergic.

I finally brought it up calmly, not even angrily and he acted like I’d just kicked his dog. He said I was being dramatic, ungrateful, and “embarrassing him in public.” I asked him how me quietly saying what I want to eat is embarrassing, and he said I “don’t understand how men express care.”

Since then, I’ve been second-guessing everything. Like, is it me? I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but I also don’t want to feel like a child who’s not allowed to speak at the dinner table.

I haven’t told my friends because I’m honestly embarrassed. But the last time we were out, one of them gave me this look of pity. And I don’t want to be someone people feel bad for.

So… am I overreacting? Or is this a red flag I’ve been trying really hard to paint beige?
