A tale of the Angkor Wat complex
I heard a story about a man. He had asked the hotel receptionist about driving around the perimeter of the Angkor complex on a scooter and if that could be done, he wasn’t sure what the rules were if it was gated etc. Basically to do a reconnaissance trip to see how the roads work around Angkor without actually going in to any temples. So he showed the receptionist the map (look and you will see a ring like road circling the complex) and they said yes you can drive around the loop for a look. The man assumed it was a road outside the complex so no bother would come of it. Off he goes. Enters the complex with not a worry. He stops around the first moat you come across , what a view. Then stops at a small temple on down the road for a look. A worker asks if he has a ticket to see the temple , the man is confused and asks what for ? To see the temple he now assumes , is he now in a complex ticketless ? Surely not. So he drives on the loop and it is a marvellous drive for about 20 minutes. Then come the checkpoints. He starts to see large gates made from the ancient rock that forms Angkor , now he is wondering how is he going to avoid another check from the pink shirted men. The man said he decided he will need to get out of there asap so off he goes. Passes a couple of checkpoints where pink shirted men tried to stop him , seeing some of the biggest temples he has ever seen. Like a game of temple run on a scooter he says. He makes it out of the ungated / unsigned complex and lives to tell me the tale. He goes back the next day and explores every temple fully , this time with a ticket that he now knew he needed.
Has anyone ever heard the likes of it ? Was he supposed to have a ticket to drive the area ?
