Mountain Camping?

Hey there. Transplant from the Colorado area. I am used to being able to take my truck up to the mountains, find a fire road, and head to the top of the mountain and set up camp for the weekend.

Is there anything like that around here? I know a place over on the other side of the Smoky Mountains in the Pisgah, but it's a 6-7 hour drive. I also know about the land between the lakes as well but not really my scene. I prefer the mountains over a lake.

I'd like to find something closer with a nice view but not part of an established camp area. Just want some privacy to enjoy the sound of the wind in the trees and mountain views.

Any recommendations? I've got a heavy-duty 4x4 truck with a winch, so there isn't anywhere I can't go. I just don't know where to go around here.
