Uneven floors

I have a bathroom that is about 1.5 lower than the connecting hallway (and all other rooms on that level of the house). The flooring is tile (on top of tile, thanks to a previous owner). It is level, but my wife doesn’t like the look of the tile (or the drop-down). Any suggestions for raising the floor to the height of the walkway while replacing the old tile? I’d prefer not to have to tear it down to the subfloor, if at all possible.
