280 mile trip from San Jose to Tuolumne and back: 5 errors (3 serious)
My M3 HW3 12.6.4/2025.14.3 FSD mostly did great, but screwed up 5 times:
-
coming out of Escalon (east side) it stayed at 38mph well after leaving town (I just goosed the accelerator once traffic behind me started started began to be impacted). Minor imposition on others.
-
it blew the left at light in Oakdale (120 eastbound), by taking the empty right lane to bypass a long line of cars and trucks waiting to make the left, then when no way to merge into the line, it tried an illegal left turn from the right lane at the light (which I interrupted). Serious safety error. Ticket risk too.
-
coming back it prematurely jumped into a left turn lane and, as no traffic behind me, out of curiosity I waited to see what would happen, and jumped back. I count that a potentially serious.
-
later on westbound 120, it erroniously jumped into the left turn lane for the exit to La Grange. As traffic was following I took over to get back into the right lane continuing 120.
-
west bound into Escalon I couldn't get it to slow down as speed limits dropped to 40 for the commercial outskirts. Was going 68. Both a safety risk, and a ticket risk.
My assessment is that the speed errors (errors 1 & 5), and maybe the left turn lane errors (errors 3 & 4) might be less likely with HW4. I think the left turn from the right lane at the light (error 2) requires better logic, not sensors. When in that situation it should go straight and reroute.
I really want FSD to work. Most of the time it drives better than I do, but I've been able to drive ~700k lifetime miles without an at fault moving accident. My luck can't last forever.
So far it's a $12k source of amusement.
