AITA for refusing to wear my MIL’s wedding dress and then kicking her out of our wedding after she removed all our flowers without asking?

I (28F) married my husband (30M) a few weeks ago. For context, I've always struggled with my MIL, but for his sake I usually don't react.

Initially, MIL offered me her wedding dress when we first got engaged. I’ll be honest—it was not my taste. It was an 80s-style ivory satin ballgown with big puffed sleeves. Very Dynasty, and absolutely lovely if thats your style. She described it as “a timeless family heirloom" but no one in the family had worn it since or before her, and it had yellowed with age.

The thing is, I had always planned to wear my godmother’s wedding dress.

My godmother was my late mom's best friend. She stepped in after mom died, and was like a second mother. She passed away 5 years ago, but left her wedding dress and a few pieces of jewellery to me. It was a simple, elegant A-line gown made of soft silk with beaded, floral detailing along the neckline. Classic and romantic, wearing it was always my dream even before she passed and was my way of honoring her. A gift from the woman who helped raise me.

I tried to explain this gently to MIL, but she was furious. She called it “morbid” and said my godmother “wouldn’t even know or care because shes not here anyway,” unlike her who “would be there and actually appreciate the gesture.” I told her I wouldn't be changing my mind.

We spent months planning our ceremony. I love flowers, and they were a big part of our aesthetic. A local florist created a flower arch, multiple aisle arrangements, altar and entry displays — the works. It was one of our splurges.

But on the day of the wedding, I walked into the venue and nearly cried. Most of our flowers were gone, and the only ones left were my bouquet, the bridesmaids’ bouquets, and the flower arch (because she couldn't dismantle it).

MIL had taken it upon herself to load the flowers into her car and deliver them to a local funeral home. She said that the flowers were “wasted on a wedding” and that “a grieving family needed them more.”

I was totally heartbroken, and told her that if she'd asked, I would have been open to donating some of the arrangements AFTER the ceremony.

She asked, “Why should they have to wait for second-hand, wilted flowers?” and told me I was being selfish and wasteful, saying “you’ve already spent enough money on yourself".

She acted like she’d done something kind and selfless. “The family at the funeral home cried and were so grateful to me” she kept saying. But she didn’t even really do it for them, she did it so she could feel like a saint.

I asked her to leave after the ceremony and not attend the reception because I couldn't look at her, but didn't want her to miss the ceremony for my husbands sake.

Weeks later, my MIL is still telling everyone that I kicked her from our wedding for “being generous” and that I “humiliated her over a few flowers”. Some of the extended family is saying I overreacted.

So, AITA for asking her to leave after the ceremony? Did I overreact over flowers? Should I have just let it go?
