New Dad Here – Feeling a Bit Helpless, How Can I Best Support My Wife and Newborn?
Hey everyone,
I’m a first-time dad — our daughter was born on April 8th, and it’s been both beautiful and overwhelming in all the ways people say it will be.
My wife has been incredible with breastfeeding, and we’ve been exclusively breastfeeding since she was born. We did use formula for the first two weeks due to some gas issues, but since then we’ve stuck to mother’s milk. However, now that we’re at the 8-week mark, I’ve been wondering if it’s time to start using bottles again.
I want to give my wife a bit of a break, especially when I see how exhausted she is from round-the-clock feedings. I’m considering introducing bottles for a feeding here and there so she can rest, but I’m also concerned about disrupting our daughter’s feeding routine or causing any issues with latch or digestion.
For those who’ve made a similar decision:
- How did you transition back to bottle feeding after exclusively breastfeeding?
- Did it help your partner get more rest, or did it introduce other challenges?
- Is there a best time or approach to introduce bottles without confusing the baby?
Thanks so much for any tips or advice — it’s hard to balance the desire to help my wife and wanting to maintain that breastfeeding bond with our little one.
