2025 IIHF Men's World Championship Schedule (refresher)
Given that it appears the Crosby and Mackinnon news will be getting more Canadian eyes on the upcoming Men's World Championship, all I can say is:
Welcome! The World Championship is one of my favourite events on the hockey calendar, and I was already looking forward to it, but Crosby and possibly Mackinnon going definitely fuels that excitement!
So allow me to bring you up to speed on the schedule!

All 64 games of the tournament will air in Canada on TSN.
The groups... seeds given are 2024 IIHF Men's World Rankings.

Relegation: The bottom team in each group will be relegated to Division 1A for 2026, with one exception:
- If Switzerland (2026 host) finishes last in their group, the next lowest finisher (from either group) is relegated instead. As 2026 hosts, Switzerland cannot be relegated.
Quarterfinals - May 22
The top 4 teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
- 10:20 - QF #1 in Stockholm
- 10:20 - QF #2 in Herning
- 14:20 - QF #3 in Stockholm - This will be Sweden's quarterfinal if they make it that far.
- 14:20 - QF #4 in Herning - This will be Denmark's quarterfinal if they make it that far.
The format is the usual A1 vs B4, A2 vs B3, B2 vs A3, B1 vs A4.
- However, as co-hosts, Sweden and Denmark cannot play each other in the quarterfinals.
- If the above format would require Sweden and Denmark to play each other in the QFs, then there is no crossover - A1 vs A4, A2 vs A3, B1 vs B4, B2 vs B3.
- This information is not on the official tournament info page (yet) but it is an educated guess based on the format used when Finland and Latvia co-hosted in 2023.
Semifinals - May 24 - in Stockholm
The eight quarterfinal teams will be seeded 1-8 based on this criteria, in this order:
- Placement in the group (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th)
- Number of points
- Goal differential
- Number of goals scored
- Seeding entering tournament (see above)
The highest seeded team will play the lowest in the semifinals, as will the two middle teams.
The semifinal games are:
- 08:20 - SF #1
- 12:20 - SF #2
- If Sweden makes it to the semifinals, they will play in SF #1.
- If Sweden does not make it to the semifinals but Denmark does, Denmark will play in SF #1.
- If neither Sweden nor Denmark make it to the semifinals, then SF #1 will be the one involving the highest and lowest seeded teams.
Medal Day - May 25 - in Stockholm
- 09:20 - Bronze Medal Game
- 14:20 - Gold Medal Game
