Seeking Winter Travel Advice: Sanriku Railway Kotatsu Train & Activities in Kuji/Miyako

Advice

Hi all,

My wife and I are planning a month-long trip to Japan in February 2026. It’ll be our first time visiting the country, and we’re both really excited. We’re starting off in Hokkaido to catch the Snow Festival, then making our way down through the country by train.

One thing I came across that caught my eye is the Sanriku Railway’s Kotatsu train—the one with the heated tables and ocean views. From what I’ve read, it runs on weekends and holidays in the winter, starting from Kuji. I was able to find the general commuter schedule here, but I haven’t had much luck confirming specifics for the Kotatsu train.

If anyone here has experience with it, I’d really appreciate any details:

  • Are there multiple departures on operating days, or just one per day?
  • How hard was it to reserve seats?
  • Any heads-up on how early tickets usually sell out?

Also, since we’ll be passing through Kuji and Miyako, I’d love to hear recommendations for things to do there in winter. We’re both big food people, so if you know of any local spots or regional specialties worth trying, I’m all ears.

Thanks in advance for any advice or stories you’re willing to share. We’re trying to plan thoughtfully, but also leave room for a little adventure.
